Solid Timber Bookcases & Bookshelves
Real books deserve a real bookcase. Every bookshelf in this collection is built from solid hardwood — not the sagging-shelf, wobbly-back type that starts to bow within a year of holding actual books. Choose from tall floor-to-ceiling library bookcases, low console bookshelves for behind a sofa, or modular cube bookcases that grow with the collection.
Shelf Load & Sag
An average hardcover weighs 800g and takes 3cm of shelf width. A metre of tightly-packed books weighs about 25kg. Our shelves are made from 25mm solid hardwood with a maximum span of 90cm between vertical supports — well within the deflection limits for a fully-loaded shelf. Cheaper bookcases use 15mm MDF shelves with 100cm+ spans; expect visible sag within a year.
Bookcase Depth & Shelf Spacing
- Standard novels: 20cm depth is plenty.
- Textbooks / art books: 30cm depth minimum.
- Adjustable spacing: every fixed-shelf model has at least three adjustable-height shelves so you can mix paperback, hardback and oversized formats.
Timber Care & Craftsmanship
Solid hardwood ages beautifully when it is looked after correctly. Dust weekly with a soft dry cloth, wipe spills immediately, and keep pieces away from direct sunlight and heating vents. Every 6–12 months, re-oil or wax the surface with a food-safe hardwood finish to preserve the natural grain and lift the colour. Avoid ammonia and silicone-based sprays — they build up and dull the timber over time.
Each Oakwalnut piece is kiln-dried below 12% moisture, machine-jointed and hand-finished. We source from FSC-certified plantations in North America, Europe and South-East Asia. Because timber is a living material, minor grain, knot and colour variation is part of what makes every piece one of a kind.

We ship Australia-wide from our Silverwater (Sydney), Melbourne and Brisbane warehouses. Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane metro receive free delivery on orders over $600; $50 flat rate under $600. Adelaide, Perth, Hobart and Darwin ship via Direct Freight Express with a live rate quoted at checkout — most orders arrive within 5–10 business days.
Prefer to see the timber first? Visit our showrooms at Silverwater NSW, Melbourne VIC, or Brisbane QLD seven days a week (Sydney closed Saturdays for pickup). Room placement, packaging removal and upstairs carries can be arranged as a paid extra, quoted on the day based on access and stairs.

Will the shelves sag under books?
Shelves are 25mm solid hardwood with a maximum unsupported span of 90cm — well inside the safe deflection limit for a fully loaded metre of books.
Can I anchor the bookcase to the wall?
Yes — every tall bookcase ships with an anti-tip wall strap. We strongly recommend anchoring any bookcase over 150cm tall, especially in homes with children.
Are the shelves adjustable?
Every bookcase in this collection has at least three adjustable-height shelves.
Can I display fragile items?
For fragile pieces we recommend our glass-fronted display cabinets. Open bookcases are best for books and sturdy decor.
