A standard shoe cabinet is about 40cm deep. In a terrace hallway, an apartment entry or behind a door that opens inward, that is 10cm too much. A slim shoe cabinet solves it by standing the shoes on their heel inside a tilting compartment instead of laying them flat — the same storage in 22 to 35cm of depth.
How a Tilting Flip-Down Door Works
The door is hinged at the bottom and pivots forward. Inside, a moulded or slatted cradle holds the shoes at an angle, toes down, so each compartment takes two to three pairs across its width. Because the shoes never lie flat, the cabinet only needs to be as deep as a shoe is tall.
- 22–27cm deep: flats, sneakers, sandals and most women’s shoes. The slimmest option — genuinely passes as a hall console.
- 28–33cm deep: the practical middle. Holds men’s shoes up to around AU size 10 and still leaves a 90cm walkway in a 1.2m hallway.
- 34–35cm deep: takes men’s size 11–12, work boots and high-tops. This is the depth to pick if the cabinet has to serve the whole household.
As a rough guide each flip-down door stores six to nine pairs, so an 80cm-wide two-door unit holds twelve to eighteen pairs in less floor space than a bedside table.
Slim, Narrow or Ultra-Thin?
The terms get used interchangeably online, and depth is what actually matters. Narrow usually describes width (a 45–65cm cabinet for a tight nook); slim and ultra-thin describe depth. If you are fighting a hallway, you want a shallow cabinet — check the depth figure on the spec table, not the word in the title.
Where a Slim Cabinet Earns Its Place
Behind an inward-opening front door, where anything deeper fouls the swing. Along a corridor that doubles as the route to the laundry. In a rental, where a freestanding unit can leave with you. Under a wall-mounted coat rack, as the base of a two-piece entry. And in apartments, where the entry is often a 900mm-wide pinch point between the door and the living room.
Frequently Asked Questions
How deep is a slim shoe cabinet?
Ours run from 22cm to 35cm deep. A standard shoe cabinet is around 40cm, so a slim unit gives back 5-18cm of hallway walkway.
Will men's size 11 shoes fit in a slim shoe cabinet?
You need at least 33cm of internal depth for AU men's size 11. The 22-27cm models are best kept for flats, sneakers and women's shoes.
How many pairs does a slim shoe cabinet hold?
Six to nine pairs per flip-down door. An 80cm two-door cabinet typically holds 12-18 pairs; a 116cm three-door holds 18-27.
How far does a flip-down door project when open?
Around 25-30cm. Allow for that when measuring, as it is more than the cabinet's closed depth.
Can a slim shoe cabinet be used as a hall console?
Yes - the 22-27cm models are about the depth of a console table, so the top works for keys, mail and a lamp.
Are the slim cabinets solid timber?
Doors, frame and top are solid hardwood - oak, cherry, beech, poplar or rubberwood depending on the model. Interior cradles and backs may be structural plywood, which is standard cabinet-maker practice at this depth.
