When a single slim cabinet has stopped coping, the answer is a shoe storage cabinet — a multi-door, full-depth unit that takes the whole household’s shoes out of sight behind one set of doors. These are the 110cm to 150cm pieces: two, three and four-door cabinets, several with drawers for keys, polish and dog leads, and a few with an open shelf at the base for the pair you actually wear every day.
Shoe Cupboard or Shoe Cabinet?
In Australia the two words get used for the same thing. If there is a distinction worth making, a shoe cupboard tends to be taller and fully enclosed — closer to a wardrobe in proportion — while a shoe cabinet is more often a low or mid-height piece whose top you can use. Both appear on this page; sort by height and door count rather than by name.
Sizing by Household
- Two-door, 65–80cm wide: roughly 12–18 pairs. Enough for a couple, or a single person with a lot of shoes.
- Three-door, 110–120cm wide: 18–24 pairs. The usual choice for a family of four, especially with a drawer for the small items.
- Four-door or 140–150cm wide: 24–30 pairs plus boots. This is the size to buy if the entry also has to absorb sports gear and school shoes.
Internal depth matters as much as width. Anything over 33cm takes AU men’s size 11 comfortably; boots and high-tops need a shelf bay of at least 30cm clear height, which is why the taller units usually have adjustable shelves.
Closed Doors, Slats or an Open Shelf
Fully closed doors hide everything and keep dust off, which suits allergy-prone households — but shoes that go away damp will stay damp. Slatted and louvered doors let air move through while still screening the contents, and are the better choice if running shoes come home wet. Several models combine the two: closed bays up top, an open shelf at the bottom for the everyday pair, so the doors are not opened twenty times a day.
