The entryway is the smallest room in the house and the hardest one to get right. It has to absorb shoes, coats, keys and school bags in a corridor that is often under a metre wide, and it is the first thing anyone sees when the front door opens. Oak & Walnut builds solid-timber hallway furniture sized for real Australian entries — slim 22cm-deep cabinets for terrace hallways, full-height shoe cupboards for family homes, and hall consoles narrow enough to pass a pram.
Building an Entryway, Piece by Piece
Most entries need three things: somewhere for shoes to go, somewhere for coats to hang, and a surface for the things you empty out of your pockets. Start with the shoes — they take the most volume and cause the most mess.
- Shoe cabinets and shoe racks: the workhorse. Closed doors hide the pile; slatted or open shelves let damp shoes dry out.
- Slim shoe cabinets: 22–35cm deep, for hallways where a standard 40cm cabinet would block the walkway.
- Shoe storage cabinets and shoe cupboards: full-height, multi-door units that take 20–30 pairs out of sight.
- Shoe benches and shoe cabinets with a seat: somewhere to sit while you put boots on, with storage underneath.
- Coat racks and coat stands: freestanding stands for renters, wall-mounted rails where floor space is tight.
- Hall consoles and entryway tables: 30–40cm deep, for keys, mail and a lamp.
How Much Width Do You Actually Have?
Measure the hallway, then subtract the furniture depth — what is left is your walkway. A single person needs about 70cm of clear walkway; a couple passing each other, or anyone carrying a laundry basket, needs closer to 90cm. In a typical 1.2m Australian hallway that means a 30cm-deep slim cabinet works and a 45cm-deep sideboard does not. Check the door swing as well: flip-down tilting doors project 25–30cm when open, hinged doors project the full door width.
Why Solid Timber in a High-Traffic Zone
The entry gets more wear per square metre than any other part of the house: wet shoes, kicked skirting boards, doors slammed in a hurry. Particleboard and MDF swell at the edges once moisture gets in and the hinge screws strip out of the chipboard core. Our pieces use real hardwood for doors, frames and tops, so a hinge can be re-seated and a scuff can be sanded back and re-oiled rather than replaced.
Frequently Asked Questions
What furniture do I need in a small entryway?
At minimum a slim shoe cabinet (22-35cm deep) and a wall-mounted coat rack. If you have 1.2m or more of hallway width you can add a hall console or a shoe bench without blocking the walkway.
How deep is a hallway console table?
Ours run 30-40cm deep, which is roughly half the depth of a dining sideboard. That keeps a standard 1.2m hallway at a comfortable 80-90cm of clear walkway.
What is a hall tree?
A hall tree combines a coat rack, a mirror and a shoe bench or storage base in one unit. It suits entries where you want a single piece doing three jobs instead of three separate items.
Can I mix oak and walnut pieces in the same entry?
Yes, and it usually reads better than matching everything. A common approach is a walnut-tone shoe cabinet with a lighter oak console, or the reverse, so the pieces read as furniture rather than a flat-pack set.
Do you deliver entryway furniture assembled?
Most shoe cabinets and consoles arrive fully assembled. Coat stands and a small number of taller units ship in two or three parts with the fixings included - normally a ten-minute job.
Do you have an entryway showroom?
All three showrooms (Silverwater NSW, Melbourne VIC, Brisbane QLD) have entryway pieces on the floor so you can check depth and door swing against a tape measure before you buy.
