A TV unit is the longest single surface in most living rooms, which makes it the piece where timber matters most. Every walnut TV unit in this collection is built from solid American black walnut, FAS-graded, in low-line widths from 180cm to 240cm. Walnut-finish units in stained oak are in our main TV units range; for a lighter look, see our solid oak TV units.
Sizing a Walnut TV Unit to Your Screen
A TV unit should be wider than the television on it — ideally by 30cm or more, so the screen does not look like it is about to tip off the ends. As a guide:
- 55–65" TV (about 125–145cm wide): a 180cm unit.
- 75" TV (about 167cm wide): 200–220cm.
- 85" TV (about 190cm wide): 220–240cm.
These units are low-line at 40–46cm high and 35–40cm deep, which puts the centre of a stand-mounted screen close to seated eye level and keeps the unit from crowding a narrow living room.
Why Solid Walnut for a TV Unit
Black walnut has a deep chocolate-brown colour with a straight, even grain that reads well across a long run of drawer fronts. It is a very stable timber, so long tops and wide drawers stay flat and keep running smoothly through Australian summers. Hannah combines a walnut exterior with liriodendron (tulipwood) for internal parts, which is a traditional cabinetmaking pairing — the show timber is walnut, the hidden structure is a lighter, stable hardwood.
Living With Walnut
Walnut is somewhat softer than oak, so slide rather than drag a soundbar or console across the top, and use felt pads under anything heavy. Over several years in a sunny room it lightens slightly to a warmer golden-brown. Wipe with a dry or lightly damp cloth, and re-oil once a year if the top starts to look dry. Pair it with a walnut bedside table to carry the same timber through the house.
Frequently Asked Questions
What size walnut TV unit do I need for a 75 inch TV?
A 75 inch TV is about 167cm wide, so choose a 200-220cm unit. The unit should be at least 30cm wider than the screen.
Are these TV units solid walnut or veneer?
The show surfaces are solid American black walnut, FAS-graded. Walnut-finish units made from stained oak are listed separately in our main TV units range.
Walnut or oak for a TV unit?
Walnut gives a darker, richer brown and suits rooms with lighter floors and walls. Oak is lighter, a little harder, and suits Scandinavian or coastal rooms. Both are stable hardwoods that will last decades. Compare our solid oak TV units.
How high should a TV unit be?
For a stand-mounted TV viewed from a sofa, 40-50cm is typical. Our walnut units are 40-46cm high, which keeps the centre of the screen close to seated eye level.
Does walnut furniture fade?
Walnut slowly lightens and warms in direct sunlight over several years. It is a gradual, even change; keeping the unit out of direct afternoon sun slows it.
Do you deliver walnut TV units Australia-wide?
Yes. Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane metro get free delivery on orders over $600, and other areas are quoted live at checkout.
