Solid Oak Coffee Tables Australia
Coffee tables built from FAS-graded solid American oak — the timber that ages into a warmer, deeper honey tone with every passing year. No veneer over MDF, no printed grain — the wood you see is the wood the piece is made from, all the way through.
Our oak coffee tables include lift-top designs for laptop work, nesting pairs for smaller lounges, and rectangular hero pieces for family rooms. Every top is finished with a food-safe wax or oil so a warm mug or a glass of wine won't leave a mark.
Why solid American oak?
American oak (mostly white oak, Quercus alba) is one of the hardest, most dimensionally stable timbers on the market — it doesn't cup, crack or warp under Australian humidity swings the way softwoods and laminated boards do. FAS is the highest grade defined by the National Hardwood Lumber Association: at least 83% of each board is clear of knots and defects. It is the same grade used in high-end joinery.
How to choose the right size
- Small lounge (2-seat sofa): 75-90cm nesting tables give you a warm surface without swallowing the room.
- Medium living room (3-seat sofa): 100-120cm rectangular or oval — leave 40cm between the sofa and the table edge.
- Open-plan / family room: 130-150cm — pair with two large armchairs for a symmetrical grouping.
- Working from the couch: choose a lift-top mechanism (Marilyn) so the surface rises to laptop height on demand.
Care in a nutshell
Wipe spills promptly with a barely-damp cloth. Every 6-12 months, refresh with a light coat of the same wax or oil finish the piece was made with — we include a care kit with each order. Keep out of direct afternoon sun to preserve the tone.
10-Year Structural Warranty
Every Oakwalnut piece is 100% solid timber — never veneer, never MDF, never particleboard. That is why we back the frame and joinery with a 10-year structural warranty. Timber that ages well, and a warranty that outlasts the trends.
Frequently asked questions
Is it real solid oak all the way through?
Yes — every Oakwalnut oak coffee table is 100% solid FAS-graded American oak. No veneer, no MDF core, no particleboard. You can see the same grain on the underside of the top as on the top surface.
What is FAS-graded oak?
FAS (First and Seconds) is the top grade in the NHLA hardwood grading system. It requires each board to be at least 83.3% clear of knots and defects. It is the grade specified by high-end furniture makers and architects.
Does oak scratch easily?
American oak is one of the harder commercial timbers (Janka rating around 1360 lbf). It resists everyday wear well. Deep scratches can be sanded back and re-oiled to look factory-new — one of the advantages of solid timber over veneer.
