Solid Timber Sideboards & Buffet Tables

The sideboard is the workhorse of the dining room — storage for the good cutlery, landing pad for serving dishes, and a surface for lamps, books and everything else that accumulates in a family home. Oakwalnut builds solid-timber sideboards and buffet tables in three formats: credenza (long and low, doors and drawers), hutch (buffet base with a glass-fronted display top), and console-style buffet (slim and open, styled for hallways or behind a sofa).

Sideboard, Buffet or Credenza — What Is the Difference?

  • Sideboard: the umbrella term — any long, low storage cabinet.
  • Buffet: a sideboard for the dining room, used to serve food and store dinnerware. Often has drawers for cutlery on top.
  • Credenza: mid-century style with sliding doors and legs that lift it off the floor.
  • Hutch (buffet & hutch): two-piece unit with a display top for china and glassware.

Sizing a Sideboard to the Room

Rule of thumb: your sideboard should be 60–70% of the dining table length. A 180cm dining table pairs beautifully with a 120–140cm sideboard. Too small and the sideboard looks orphaned; too large and it swallows the room. If the sideboard sits under a window, keep the height under 90cm so it does not block the sill.

Timber Care & Craftsmanship

Solid hardwood ages beautifully when it is looked after correctly. Dust weekly with a soft dry cloth, wipe spills immediately, and keep pieces away from direct sunlight and heating vents. Every 6–12 months, re-oil or wax the surface with a food-safe hardwood finish to preserve the natural grain and lift the colour. Avoid ammonia and silicone-based sprays — they build up and dull the timber over time.

Each Oakwalnut piece is kiln-dried below 12% moisture, machine-jointed and hand-finished. We source from FSC-certified plantations in North America, Europe and South-East Asia. Because timber is a living material, minor grain, knot and colour variation is part of what makes every piece one of a kind.

Delivery, Showrooms & White-Glove Setup

We ship Australia-wide from our Silverwater (Sydney), Melbourne and Brisbane warehouses. Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane metro receive free delivery on orders over $600; $50 flat rate under $600. Adelaide, Perth, Hobart and Darwin ship via Direct Freight Express with a live rate quoted at checkout — most orders arrive within 5–10 business days.

Prefer to see the timber first? Visit our showrooms at Silverwater NSW, Melbourne VIC, or Brisbane QLD seven days a week (Sydney closed Saturdays for pickup). Room placement, packaging removal and upstairs carries can be arranged as a paid extra, quoted on the day based on access and stairs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a sideboard and a buffet?

A buffet is a sideboard used specifically in a dining room for serving. All buffets are sideboards; not all sideboards are buffets.

How wide should my sideboard be?

Aim for 60–70% of your dining table length. A 180cm dining table pairs well with a 120–140cm sideboard.

Are the drawers dovetailed?

Yes — every drawer uses solid-timber dovetail joinery, not stapled plywood.

Can I use a buffet as a media console?

Yes, provided it is the right height (45–55cm for TV viewing from a sofa). Look for buffets with cable-management ports.

Do you offer bespoke sizing?

For some ranges, yes — particularly the black walnut and oak lines. Contact us with your dimensions.
