A dining table is the piece you use every day, so it is worth choosing the timber carefully. This collection brings together our walnut dining tables made from solid walnut: FAS-graded American black walnut on Lyra, Dorian, Joan and Carla, and South American walnut on Aisha and Alaric. Round tables run from 100cm to 150cm across, rectangular tables from 140cm to 240cm long. Walnut-colour tables in stained oak, ash and other hardwoods are in our main dining tables range.
Choosing a Walnut Dining Table Size
Allow about 60cm of table edge per person, and keep at least 90cm clear between the table and the nearest wall so chairs can slide out. As a guide:
- Round 100–110cm (Dorian, Joan): 4 people, good for apartments and breakfast nooks.
- Round 120cm (Dorian): 4, or 5 at a squeeze.
- Round 150cm (Carla): 6 people, everyone can talk across the table.
- Rectangular 140–160cm (Lyra): 4–6 people.
- Rectangular 180–200cm (Lyra): 6–8 people.
- Narrow 180–240cm (Aisha, Alaric): 52–55cm deep, for long thin rooms or a table that doubles as a desk.
Round or Rectangular?
A round walnut table suits square rooms and smaller households: no corners, nobody stuck at the end, and the grain reads as one continuous surface. A rectangular table seats more people for the same floor area in a long room and is easier to extend a gathering around with a bench. Lyra comes in four lengths, so it can be sized to the room rather than the other way round.
Why Walnut for a Dining Table
Black walnut has a deep chocolate-brown colour and a fine, even grain that makes a large tabletop look calm rather than busy. It is a stable timber, so tops stay flat through Australian summers. Carla's top combines black walnut with pine; the others are walnut throughout the visible timber. Walnut sits well with both light oak floors and darker rooms, and pairs naturally with our solid oak dining chairs for a two-tone look.
Living With Walnut
Walnut is somewhat softer than oak, so use placemats under hot dishes and felt pads under anything you slide across the top. In a sunny room it lightens slowly to a warmer golden-brown over several years. Wipe with a dry or lightly damp cloth and re-oil once a year if the top starts to look dry.
